Dr. Richard Beamish
Early years |
Richard J. Beamish was born in 1942 in Toronto, Canada. He began his first official career as a fisheries biologist in the 1960s, and finished his Ph.D. at the University of Toronto in 1970 in Zoology and went directly to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute for a Postdoctoral Fellowship. After that, he worked at the Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg for a few years, and worked at the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo, British Columbia in the mid-1970s. He was the Head of the Groundfish Section from 1977-1979 and Director from 1980-1993.(1) Right now he is Commissioner and President of the Pacific Halibut Commission and an affiliate professor of marine fisheries and aquaculture at Malaspina University College.(2)

Scientific Discoveries |
Richard J. Beamish revolutionized the way age is determined in fish, resulting in a complete rethinking of stock management and the discovery that rockfish can live a full century.(2) He also established the relationship between climate change, such as acid rain, and fish populations.He also was one of the first scientists to write about climate regimes and regime shifts.(1)
